St. Croix River Fishing Information
Lower St. Croix River | Stillwater, MN to Prescott, WI

February 20, 2015 - Fishing action continues to be slow for most anglers. However, a few anglers are finding the occasional 12-inch plus slab crappies for which the St. Croix River is known. These fish are healthy and thick, as shown in the photo at right. This chunky 15-inch crappie caught by Derek near Bayport.

Fish houses must be removed by midnight on March 1. Please pick up litter near your shelter, whether it belongs to you or not. Let's all work together to keep the St. Croix River clean!

Fishing action often improves throughout March. Walleye and sauger season is closed after March 1, but crappie fishing can be very good as the days get longer.

You'll find helpful tips for gear and techniques at this link:

January 21, 2015 - The community fishing spots in the Bayport basin are well-populated this year. Minimal snow cover allows for easy driving. Fishing action has been slow for most anglers. The ice is 16-18 inches thick in the common areas. Be sure to stay away from the King Plant and the construction area for the new St. Croix River Crossing.

You can access the community fishing spots from Bayport, MN or Hudson, WI. Ferry Landing Park in Hudson has a parking area at the top of the hill. Alternatively, you can park on the ice near either shoreline if you prefer to walk out to the middle of the river.

St. Croix River giant sturgeon

January 1, 2015 - Will Spychalla and Carlin Salmela caught a giant 75" sturgeon on a shiner. This enormous fish weighed an estimated 115 pounds based on the length and girth formula. The current Minnesota State Record is 70", 94 pounds, 4 ounces. Note: the fish was caught out of season and immediately released, so it does not qualify as the new official Minnesota State Record. Nonethless, what a catch!

November 24, 2014 - This marks the second winter season of St. Croix Crossing bridge construction. A tug boat is continuously breaking ice near the bridge piers to allow construction crews to work on the new river crossing.

Currently, crews are breaking ice across the river from the Minnesota shoreline to the Wisconsin shoreline. This causes thin, irregular and dangerous ice conditions between Stillwater and Bayport. Crews plan to regularly break ice on the river throughout winter 2014-15. For safety reasons, we need everyone to use extreme caution and stay away from the construction area. Warning signs will soon be placed on the ice near the bridge.
