St. Croix River Fishing Information
March 1, 2016 - Approximately 12 inches of ice remains on the Bayport basin. Traffic is limited to ATVs due to thin ice near access points. Crappie action is spotty, but some nice 12+ inch slabs are being caught.   Some anglers report catching up to 20 crappies during a half day on the ice. Walleye, sauger and sturgeon season is now closed. If you are a resident of Minnesota, you'll need to purchase a new fishing license for the 2015-2016 season.
St. Croix River Ice Fishing Report
january 25, 2016 - Ice conditions have improved significantly in the Bayport basin area. Currently there are 9-10 inches of ice in the most popular locations. This amount of ice supports ATV and small vehicle traffic. However, full-size trucks should stay off the ice.   Angling activity has increased, and some limits are being caught. Crappies are suspended in 30-45 feet of water and biting on minnow/bobber rigs, small spoons and jigs tipped with waxies. Fish are being caught throughout the day, but early morning and evening hours yield the most action.

Jamie Isker sent us this photo of a nice bunch of crappies caught on the St. Croix River on January 20. Several fish were over 12 inches in length. Nice slabs, Jamie!
january 16, 2016 - Ice anglers are enjoying the extended season for sturgeon which was implemented last year. Sturgeon numbers have increased in the St. Croix River due to improved water quality, dam removals, restorative stocking efforts and conservative regulations.   The extended catch-and-release season is a positive outcome related to these efforts. The St. Croix River has yielded some enormous fish over the past few years. Some fish weigh over 100 pounds and exceed six feet in length.
Darren Troseth shared this video of several sturgeon caught recently. It appears they provided a good fight on light gear. Thanks for sharing the video, Darren!

St. Croix River “ice bridge”

January 12, 2016 - Ice conditions have improved and many anglers have been targeting crappies on the St. Croix River near Bayport, MN. According to the reports we've received, fishing action has been slow.

Ice thickness ranges from 5-7 inches on this part of the river. We're seeing ATVs and snowmobiles on the ice, but we suggest NO VEHICLE TRAFFIC until the ice is at lest 12 inches thick.

January 8, 2016 - Ice conditions remain poor on the St. Croix River near Bayport, MN and Hudson, WI. Ice thickness varies from 1-5 inches in this part of the river, depending on the amount of current beneath. In addition, soft edges along the shoreline areas make access difficult.

St. Croix River ice report

Please STAY OFF THE ICE until it is at least 4-6 inches thick. The next 7-10 days of cold weather should help to improve these conditions.
